The NC Pre-K program (formerly More at Four) is designed to help prepare children for success in kindergarten and beyond.

Eligibility:

• Children must be 4 years old on or before August 31st of the current school year and planning to attend kindergarten the following year.
• Eligibility is determined primarily by family size and gross income, but other factors may also qualify your child, including:
  • Children of eligible military families
  • Children with an identified disability or developmental/educational need
  • Children/families with limited English proficiency
  • Children/families experiencing homelessness
  • Children with a chronic health condition that could impact learning and development

• Enhance each child’s readiness for kindergarten
• Support social-emotional growth
• Identify and address individual needs by connecting families with helpful services
• Equip parents with tools and information to help their child succeed in school

• Class size: Maximum of 18 children with two teachers
• Schedule: Classes operate Monday–Friday for 6.5 hours per day
• Some locations may offer extended care before/after school and on teacher workdays (contact the site director or principal for details)
• Health assessments are required before entering the NC Pre-K program
• Transportation is the responsibility of the parent or guardian

1. Complete the online application (note: applying does not guarantee placement).
2. Make sure to:
   • Complete all sections of the application
   • Include a valid phone number
   • Attach a copy of your child’s birth certificate
   • Include income verification (most recent pay stubs, wage verification, or tax return if self-employed)
3. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Families whose children are selected will be contacted by phone or email.

Licensed child care facilities (temporary, 4-star, or 5-star licenses) interested in hosting an NC Pre-K classroom for the 2026-2027 school year must attend an informational meeting.
